Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, had publicly said that Marimekko would not print floral designs. In her opinion, natural flowers were so beautiful that they should not be used as motifs on fabrics. Maija Isola, however, refused to accept any rules and restrictions. She suprised Armi Ratia by drawing and painting a series of exuberant floral patterns, one of which was Unikko.
Marimekko Corporation is a leading Finnish textile and clothing design company that was established in 1951. The company designs, manufactures and markets high-quality clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags and other accessories under the Marimekko brand, both in Finland and abroad. Marimekko were made famous worldwide by Jacqueline Kennedy, who bought eight Marimekko dresses which she wore throughout the 1960 US Presidential campaign.
