Retro is cool!

Retro is cool!

Anyone remember the Volkswagen Beetle? Not the smooth modern effort, the real old school one. While admittedly the new one is better, more fuel efficient and faster; is it as cool? I think not. The old Beetle oozes cool factor. That is because they are retro.

Retro-cool is something of a craze and always has been. Some might feel nostalgic at the sight or thought of something from their childhood like the wireless or hanging ball chairs. Although now the originals may be over the hill, the style most certainly is not. The new generation and most likely those before it get bored with conventional ‘modern’ furniture, accessories and appliances. For example, radios fresh off the production line could well have been made in the 1930′s and hanging ball chairs who’s first design was seen in 1968 are being sold in their droves as the cutting edge of ‘modern’ style. Old school is making contemporary look outdated.

Retro furniture and accessories are great for adding character to an otherwise flavourless room and alternatively adding some colour and life to a mundane one. Floral cushions and rugs are retro, providing a flashback of “flower power” and psychedelic art. These decorative objects with their colourful and ‘out-there’ designs can be matched to almost any room. For example, using the base colour of floral cushions or a retro bean bag to match wall colours can look great. Or where a very contemporary looking room with a lot of glass and white white walls can, without the addition of retro and colourful accessories, can look quite clinical. It goes without saying that the sterile look is not ideal for a cosy living room or bright kitchen.

Do not let your fear of change or want to keep up with the times deter you from using retro design in your home. Retro can be contemporary and also allows you to convey a unique style and love for quality design. Let it be said that “retro is most definitely cool!”.
